• Agenda 2012: Building on the success, look to the future

  2011 events have put the International Olympic Committee and the Olympic movement in a strong position as we look to 2012 and subsequent years. During this year we have taken steps to protect the integrity of sports, the strengthening of our ties with the UN and have expanded our efforts to use sport as a tool for development, while retaining all the strong focus on our core mission to ensure a successful Olympic Games.

  International Olympic Committee continues to play a leading role in the fight against doping, with the active support of our international federations and national Olympic committees. We have also taken action against other disasters, illegal and incorrect rates. IOC, together with governments, IFs, NOCs and security operators for collective action.

  
  Our partnership with

  UN stronger than ever. Our cooperation is expanding coverage of sports as a tool for peace, development and stability throughout the world. In September, I was pleased to represent the IOC in the UN General Assembly, helping to improve the role of sport in the fight against noncommunicable diseases. Earlier this year, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon attended the 2nd International Forum on Sport, Peace and Development in Geneva, focusing on the sport as a catalyst for achieving the Millennium Development Goals. Our cooperation with the UN in 2012, will include initiatives related to environmental summit of Rio 20 in Brazil.

  
  Although the organizers of the Games

  progress this year in preparation for the 2012 London Games in Sochi in 2014, Igor and 2016 Rio Games, the IOC has looked further into the future. Organizers in Phenchhane went to work almost immediately after the city was selected in July to take place in 2018 Winter Olympics.

  We have something to look forward to next year. The first winter Youth Olympic Games will start in Innsbruck on January 13. With the support of our international federations and national Olympic committees, I am sure that this is the first event will be based on the success of the first Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore last year. We also believe in the future games in Nanjing, which will host the 2nd edition of the Summer in 2014, and in Lillehammer, host the 2nd edition of Winter in 2016.

  Games XXX Olympiad will open on 27 July, when London becomes the first city to spend three editions of the Olympic Games. Igor has made the East London and are ready to leave the big sport and legacy of one of the worlds most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities. I hope to see you there next summer.
