Garufi was vice-president of the Italian Gymnastics Federation for 25 years. He is also a judge of men’s gymnastics at the Olympics in Los Angeles in 1984 and in Seoul in 1988, five world championships and many major international competitions.

  We have just learned that as part of activities to mark International Women’s Day, the Albanian National Olympic Committee Women and Sport Commission held a roundtable discussion on the physical and social impact of sport in the lives of Albanian women. Topics covered included the declaration of the 5th World Conference on Women and Sports in Los Angeles in February of last year, a brief history of women’s participation in the Olympics, as well as the role of women leaders in the Albanian sports. Sporting events were also organized for the participants.

  Women and Sport Commission, Barbados Olympic Association also celebrated International Women’s Day by holding a special event on the Barbados Olympic Centre. • Lyric Opera of Chicago announces its world premiere: Bel Canto

  Anthony Freud, general director of Lyric Opera of Chicago, has announced details of its new world premiere. Bel Canto, a gifted young Peruvian composer Jimmy L? Pez, with a libretto by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Neil Cruz, based on the bestseller Ann Patchett.
